Description:
Paper and heelball; black paper with gold wax. John stands with his hands praying while Ellen has her hands open and apart. Ellen has a richly decorated dress and a large necklace. John had large decorative armor.
Historical Context:
Wax rubbing of the funerary brass of John Pernard (d. 1451) and his first wife Ellen Swynerton (d. 1440). Original brass is located at St. Andrew Church in Cambridgeshire, England. The full brass includes his second wife Elizabeth Sakevyle (d. 1464) who commissioned the brass of the three of them together. Ellen is wearing a richly decorated gown and John is wearing armour that was probably more decorative than practical with its large bulky plates.
