John Croston and Three Wives
Medium:Paper and heelball
Date:1970 – 1980
Paper and heelball; Wax rubbing of British Brass grave monument. Silver on black paper. John Croston surrounded by his three wives. The wives are identical and John is wearing armor with a dog at his feet.
Wax rubbing of the funerary brass of John Croston and his three wives who are not named. John’s armor is a good example of how armor during this time was trending towards ornamental rather than practical because of its large bulk plates. The dog at his feet is believed to represent a pet he had in life since it is looking up at him adoringly instead of off to the side like symbolic animals in iconography.
