Description:
Photograph is double exposure of Alexander Calder's La Grande Vitesse. It is a close-up of the sculpture, and there are two garbage cans and a park bench on the left side of the image in the background.
Historical Context:
The sculpture that Claudia Liberatore has captured in her photograph is “La Grande Vitesse”. Originally installed in 1969 in downtown Grand Rapids it was created for the city by Alexander Calder. “La Grande Vitesse” itself has become a local icon for the town's annual Festival of the Arts, a festival inspired by Calder himself. Calder is an American artist most famous for inventing the mobile. He would bend and twist the wires to create his works of art. This also made it seem as though he was drawing images in space.
