I Need a Home

Kate Malburg
GVSU Collection
Digital Photograph
Artworks - Height: 20" Width: 16"
Digital photograph of a young woman holding a sign with "I need" and a hand drawn image of a house.
Historical Context:
Kate Malburg’s photographs of local Muskegon, Michigan teens were first displayed in an exhibition organized by the nonprofit Community enCompass’ Youth Empowerment Project (YEP). The photographs are both complex and straight-forward, filled with questions of social criticism, teen homelessness, racism and mental health. For Malburg, the main goal of her project was to give these local teens a voice and a place to show their concerns. She states, “What does it take to have a healthy community? What does that look like? What aspects make up community and how we view it? I worked with these teens for such a short time, but learned a lifetime about them and how they think a community should be. I had the privilege to capture their thoughts and ideas through photographs, basing them off of narratives that the teens themselves wrote. My goal with these images is to leave an impact on their community and to touch the hearts and inspire those that view this body of work.”
