Historical Context:
Nick Estrada’s senior thesis exhibition explored the idea of identity through portraiture, asking how one photograph can capture someone’s true self when people have so many sides to their personalities. For each model he took a number of photographs using different backgrounds and costumes to explore the multiple facets of each person’s individual personalities. On his work he states, "People have always fascinated me. There are no two people who are exactly the same. So with this project I asked myself, how could I show more than just a person's face? This series is not about simply capturing someone's appearance. Instead, it is an attempt to convey their personality through a photograph. Through the use of studio photography and compositing, I have made an effort to create dynamic scenes that pull the viewer into the image. My hope is that this body of work will present a fresh way of viewing portraiture and allow others to ponder what people might see if it was their portrait on the wall."
