Historical Context:
With striking color, Maria Tomasula’s still-life images find the most careful balance between man-made objects and organic floral elements. Her images make simple objects seem like vibrant characters, brought together to create metaphorical, poetic stories. Her influences come from her Catholic upbringing, recalling the tradition of altar painting in Mexican Catholic churches she visited as a child. These memories of the idealized figures of saints and scenes of sacrifice resurface in her art through overall beautiful floral scenes that actually reveal to be tortured with the push and pull of strings, hooks and nails upon closer examination.
