Historical Context:
Gilbert was in Italy for 8 years photographing the landscape and different towns and out of this work sprung this collection, “Light from Light”. Throughout different churches and basilicas, Gilbert focuses on the way light transforms the room in these black and white photos. To him, light has always had a spiritual connection and theological implication, and is mysterious in the same way that he finds God to be. He finds that the presence of light is synonymous to the way God’s presence fills and lives in these holy spaces.
