Black rectangular plate with a bar code on the front.
Much of Jeremy Brooks’ art forces the viewer to reevaluate the chinaware at their dinner table and consider the various layers of humanity. In his series, “Consumer,” Brooks brings a common barcode to the forefront of a china plate rather than hidden on the back, or something removed once purchased. Instead, Brooks begs one to bring American consumerism to the forefront and stare at it as they consume a meal. The barcode becomes the purpose of the plate, rather than the function of purchasing the plate.
