Historical Context:
Throughout Gilbert’s career, his photography has always been driven by capturing the light around him as it changes landscapes and architecture. In this collection, “Italian Light”, different locations throughout Italy, like Venice, Rome, Tuscany, and Umbria, are photographed as if he is chasing the sunlight as it is found throughout the narrow streets or nestled in the trees or blanketing the Tiber river. These pictures show a quiet nature of these bustling cities that give a romantic view of such old and charming locations. He describes his photography as being explorative and the canvas is simply the world around him and his subject has remained “elusive and inexhaustible” for more than 45 years.
