As a child in China, Xu Beihong studied Chinese classics and calligraphy with his father. He went to Paris to study at the 'Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts' on a government scholarship in 1919. He began teaching art in 1927 and was made President for the Beiping Academy of Fine Arts in 1928. Beihong is respected by his peers in the art world for his passion and free artistic spirit.
