Historical Context:
"This piece pertains to my home, Ithaca, NY though you wouldn't immediately suspect. The Devonian Period was almost named The Ithacan, but Devon, England had more clout (at the time and probably still.) The Marcellus Shale in upstate NY which has recently become rather infamous because large gas companies are hoping to pillage the land in search for natural gas by a terrible procedure called "hydrofracking." They would be digging into rocks that were laid more than 240 million years ago full of fossilized sea life, cracks and fissures which the natural gas and chemicals could escape into the atmosphere and the water. The whole idea makes me sick." - Jenny Pope
