Historical Context:
While better known for her long career in art education and watercolor paintings, Dorothy Bair would also experiment with printmaking. No matter the art medium, natural scenes, trees, flowers and bright colors dominate her images. After marrying her husband Edward, the moved from Nebraska to Bloomington, Indiana and Bair fully embraced becoming a “Hoosier artist.” She joined many different art communities like the Brown Co. Art Guild and the Hoosier Salon. The Hoosier Salon is an annual judged art exhibition that features the work of Indiana artists and helps them market their work. The Salon originated in Chicago in 1924 when the Daughters of Indiana, a group of women who were born in Indiana but resided in the Chicago metro area, held a gathering devoted to Hoosier painters.
