Historical Context:
Local lifestyle photographer Jillian VanZytveld photographs everything from engagements, to family portraits, to the everyday moments and memories you want to remember for a lifetime. While not busy with her business, VanZytveld also takes time to travel and document her own life adventures. This photograph was taken on a trip to Hong Kong, a reunion she had with the city after not having enough time to explore it on a study abroad trip ten years earlier. Regarding this photograph she states, “Hong Kong is a dynamic region, constantly evolving and modernizing. In urban areas, aspects of traditional culture continue to disappear under the pressures of economic development, but the remote island of Tai O persists as one of few remaining traditional Hong Kong fishing villages. This photograph captures an aging mural that exists in the heart of Tai O as the sun begins to sink over the South China Sea. Will tourism become the means of Tai O's survival, or will the village disappear into history as well?”
