Historical Context:
Fernand Pierre was born in Carrefour near Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1919. He began his career as a merchant wood carver until enrolling at the Centre d'Art in 1948, where he expanded his skills to ceramics and painting. In 1951, Pierre and 5 other artists set off to create the large-scale mural La Visitation at the Cathedrale Ste. Trinite de Port-au-Prince, which is now world-renowned.
