Historical Context:
“Crown Hall” is based on the studio building with the same name at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago, Illinois. It was designed by the German-American architect Lugwig Mies van der Rohe. Van der Rohe was known for his minimalist architecture using modern materials for his time, including industrial grade steel and plate glass.
The exterior of “Crown Hall” is made from acrylic panels featuring photographic images of plant-life photographed by artist Glenn Wexler as he roamed the IIT campus. He states on his work, “As part of the process of producing much of my work, I photographically document pockets of nature interfacing architecture structure. The final artwork brings together these subjects, creating forum in which a visual dialogue is established between them and, in part, pays homage to architectural design that finds inspiration within nature.”
