This series of drawings of Mars by Sir William Herschel was published in his collected writings in the early nineteenth century. A British astronomer of German origin, Herschel improved the determination of the rotation period of Mars and discovered that the Martian polar caps vary seasonally. He also discovered the planet Uranus in 1781, the first planet to be identified since antiquity.
