This 3-D image taken by the microscopic imager on the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit shows the powdery soil of Mars. 3-D images are used to carefully navigate rovers through rocks and sandy areas on the Red Planet. They also help the rovers effectively reach out and touch rocks that they are investigating.
