The white circles in this image mark locations of auroras detected by the SPICAM instrument on the European Space Agency’s Mars Express during orbits from 2004 to 2014. The data is superimposed on the magnetic-field lines from NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor, where red indicates closed field lines, grading through yellow, green, and blue to open field lines in purple. There is very little magnetic field on Mars, and therefore limited auroras, which only occur as a result of a planet’s magnetism.
