Historical Context:
After the ongoing water contamination crisis in Flint, Michigan in April of 2014, the city was left without drinkable water. Worried and concerned about the residents’ health and well-being, many began to voice their concerns. Among the call for action, young voices were often left unheard. GVSU Alum Stephanie Smedley created the “Young Flint Speaks,” an exhibit at ArtPrize that shed light on the personal experiences of fifty middle school students at Flint Linden Charter Academy. Students were asked how the lead in their public water system impacted their lives - and here are three of their responses. This artwork was created by a 7th grader at Linden Charter School in Flint, Michigan.
