Oh That We Could Shed Our Skin and Begin Again

Oil on linen still life painting including a human skull, snake skin, a butterfly and a conch shell.
"I envied the snake you see. That it could wriggle out of its skin and continue on its way, all shiny and beautiful in its newness. Leaving the old behind. As a woman of a certain age, I envied that ability." That's where this painting began, with the discovery of the snakeskin on the road in front of our house. I had also wanted to do a proper vanitas painting for a long time, and this was my chance. The skull had been with me for a dozen years. With the snakeskin and a butterfly I had found in the yard one day, everything fell into place, and the composition came together quickly. My theme was one of regeneration, rebirth, and resurrection." - Beverly Adams
