Black and white/ sepia photograph. Image is of a bench on a hill overlooking the city below.
This image is looking west from Lookout Park with the Berkey and Gay Furniture Factory in the distance. Lookout Park sits up a hilltop property that was once home to the city's old waterworks. Brothers William and Julius Berkey were among the first in the area to make the transition from sash and bind milling to furniture production. Only a few years after George W. Gay became a partner, the business was booming and a brand new 6-story factory was built, becoming a prominent structure in Grand Rapids.
