Historical Context:
This sculpture by Leanne Schnepp is inspired by the 1937 oil on canvas painting by Pablo Picasso titled "Portrait of Dora Maar." It depicts Dora Maar, the painter's lover, seated in a chair. It is currently in the collection of the Musée Picasso, in Paris, France. On her work Schnepp reflects, "Dora Maar, (original name Henrietta Theodora Markovitch) was a photographer and painter with strong ties to the surrealist circle. She photographed many of the Surrealists artists and exhibited them throughout the 1930's and 40's. She made dark photomontages composed of ambiguous Juxtapositions. (Oh, and she was Pablo Picasso's most famous muse.)"
