Artwork
Historical Context:
From large murals on the sides of buildings, to small paintings on scrap wood and cardboard, local artist Reb Roberts is known for spreading joy throughout the Grand Rapids community. While he never had formal art education, Roberts has not let this stifle his desire to make art. He creates spontaneously, paints what comes to him in the moment, incorporating what message he feels needs to be spread at any specific time or location. Using a variety of types of visual and verbal graffiti, he uses a combination of house paint, cardboard, paper, wood, metal and other found materials. His artwork is full of quirky, colorful characters and animals with messages of hope, love, and happiness. On his work he states, “My paintings are both complimentary and contrary to nature. They are not always within the realm of being normal. We should be suspicious of anything that is normal.”
