Historical Context:
“Persephone’s tragedy should not be romanticized. The removal of agency for the benefit of their male counterparts is an occurrence too many modern women and non-binary individuals are forced to endure. Persephone’s choice and humanity are stripped bare for the interest of Hade’s objectification. To romanticize his actions is to condone them. Greek mythology is filled with wondrous and fantastical individuals with many strengths and flaws. By mitigating the latter, we also mitigate the foundational cracks upon which Western culture was built.” – Katie Pershon
