Alan Shields was born in Herington, Kansas. He attended Kansas State University, studying civil engineering and studio art. He became very influenced by the work of Buckminster Fuller. In 1968 he moved to New York, living and working on Shelter Island, an island at the eastern end of Long Island. In 1973, Shields received a Guggenheim Fellowship and traveled to South American and India.
