Historical Context:
Paintbrushes have been in use since around 300 BCE, when the invention is attributed to an artist in the Qin dynasty. Traditionally the brushes are constructed with animal hair bound and glued under a metal clasp and attached to a wooden handle. In modern times, different brush materials are used with different paints; soft bristles are often used with watercolor, and coarse bristles are usually utilized for oil painting.
