“The Tree of Life or Blazing Tree, 1845“ by Hannah Cohoon
Medium:Poster reproduction of original 1845 painting
Height: 18 in
Width: 24 in
Gray-green tree covered in football-shaped leaves. Each leaf is trimmed with red squiggles. Handwritten script fills the space beneath the tree.
Painted in the Hancock Shaker Village in 1845, this drawing represents the early Shaker communities in America--vibrant and growing. "The bright silver color'd blaze streaming from the edges of each green leaf, resembles so many bright torches. N.B. I saw the whole Tree as the Angel held it before me as distinctly as I ever saw a natural tree. I felt very cautious when I took hold of it lest the blaze should touch my hand." -Hannah Cohoon
