Historical Context:
The Buddha, known as Gautama Sakyamuni was regarded as an ideal human being who taught that salvation could be achieved through an individual’s work and actions and by following the eightfold path. After the death of the Master, Buddhism acquired greater popularity. It drew adherents from all sections of society and led to the development of monastic Buddhism.
