"Stories have always been one of my passions; hearing stories gives me new perspective and inspiration that I use in my work. My narratives strive to draw people into these stories in the same way that I’ve been drawn to stories all my life. These anecdotes are based in mythologies of all kinds, they use fabrications of all the sources of stories I’ve been exposed to. Additionally I’ve always been interested in the juxtaposition of death and sleep, loneliness and disruption; these themes appear in many of my works and I use them to reflect on life and cognizance, wholeness and peacefulness. Working with charcoal allows me to bring these dramatic emotions into play without over exaggerating the situation or disturbing the natural flow of the story at hand." -Matthew Rettinger
