Historical Context:
This reproduction print represents one of many paintings in Lyubov Popova’s (1889-1924) series titled “Painterly Architectonic.” In this series painted between 1916 and 1918, Popova began to explore the possibilities of an abstract language by stacking blocks of color, creating rhythm within a highly structured composition. Her use of bright colors is one of Popova’s contribution to Suprematism, a term to describe a Russian art movement that rejected painting’s historic devotion to representation, focusing instead on the power of pure artistic feeling.
