Historical Context:
Henri Matisse was a French artist known for his use of color and draftsmanship. He was a master draftsman, print maker, and sculptor, but worked mainly as a painter. Although he was initially labeled as a Fauve painter, by the 1920s he was increasingly drawn more toward traditional French painting. His mastery of color and drawing won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.
