Historical Context:
Building upon the broad range of his expression, Bill Reid translated his original designs of animal crests into limited editions silk screen or woodcut prints and drawings. This is a reproduction of one of those drawings. Typical of Beaver design representations are his big incisors, a stick held in its fore feet, and a scaly tail. Here a bird's head with humanoid features represents the tail, situated between the Beaver's ears, an allusion to the transformation from Beaver to human in Haida Mythology.
