Historical Context:
Local Grand Rapids artist Cathy Pilling Marashi works within a visual language that spans science, mathematics and geometry. She is heavily influenced by religion, culture and mythology which provide much of the subjects and symbolism in her work. This piece reflects the Greek myth of master craftsman Daedalus and his son, Icarus. Together the duo attempt to escape the Labryinth by means of wings that Daudalus constructed from feathers and wax.
