Historical Context:
Mrs. Brown was born in Casino, New South Wales, Australia on November 19, 1918. Brown began working at Grand Valley State College in 1962 as the college's first accountant. She was selected for the job by Philip Buchen and began at a time when the college's only building was a small gray farmhouse on the Allendale campus. She worked for Grand Valley State University for 25 years, retiring in 1987. She earned her bachelor's degree in English by taking classes reflecting her love of philosophy, history, and poetry throughout her career. Mrs. Brown died February 17, 2001. Her bachelor's degree was awarded posthumously that year.
