Description:
A blue tulip with white around the edges of the peddle. The background is dark red and green mixed together.
Historical Context:
Addy Coumou's "tulip fever" began when she first saw the parrot tulips of the seventeenth-century painters at the Teylers Museum in the Netherlands. The fickleness of the flower and the characteristic lines made a great impression on her. Taking her own spin on traditional floral paintings, Coumou paints realistic tulips on a stark black background, making the paintings sometimes almost an abstraction. She has also created her own techniques to create the most brilliant, life-like tulip image she can using acrylic paints, oil pastels, and graphite on a transparent background.
