Historical Context:
This postcard is a representation of a cotton appliqué created in Benin, Nigeria. This piece depicts the symbol of the ninth King of Benin (formerly Dahomey), King Ghezo, who ruled from 1818 to 1858. He is considered to be one of the greatest of the 12 historical kings.
