Historical Context:
Jean Dubuffet, a French artist from the early 20th Century coined the term "Art Brut" - which later turned into the term "Outsider Art." The phrase describes work that exists outside the formal art world, free from the constraints of art education and concepts of modern art-making. Artwork often reflects a more direct way to express oneself. It is artist Reb Roberts's mission to continue this tradition throughout Grand Rapids through his own art and public murals. For over 17 years (1999-2017) Reb worked with and supported other local artists through his gallery, Sanctuary Folk Arts.
