Historical Context:
This piece was commissioned by Edouard Fournier in the 1890s. Founier owned a nightclub in the Montmartre neighborhood called Divan Japonais. In the background, to the left, sits the famous dancer Jane Avril, near the critic Eduoard Dujardin. They are shown to be watching a performance by the legendary chanteuse, Yvette Guilbert. This poster was a showoff of the vibrant nightlife in the Divan Japonais. The original artwork is from the Robert L. Hoskins and Erwin A. Raible Collection of Fin de Siècle French Prints, a gift of Elaine Rutowski Shay.
