Historical Context:
This drawing was originally created in 1896 for the review Le Rire, which was directed by a friend of Lautrec's, an art critic named Arsene Alexandre. Sitting down is Ambroise Thomas at his opera, 'Françoise de Rimini'. In the front is Misia Natanson's hat, who was the wife of one of the famous Natanson brothers. Lautrec often used topical subjects for his drawings.
