Abstract etching depicting a wind up toy.
Historical Context:
Growing up in the family tool and die shop, Julie Simancek knew from an early age that working with metal was where her interests were. At GVSU, she worked towards a BFA in Jewelry and Metalsmithing. This series of prints, titled “Sketchbook,” represent the connection games, toys and cultural influences have to Simancek’s work while at GVSU. While her images are full of common metal objects she’d use in her studio, a sense of whimsical is also present. This quirkiness makes the viewer second guess what the actual object is, and want to know more about what it is and how it works. For Simancek, it’s this curiosity that makes her artwork successful.
