Dioscorides (circa 40 to 90 C.E.) was a Greek physician, pharmacologist, and botanist who authored a 5-volume medical encyclopedia titled "De Materia Medica" ("Of Medical Materials"). This print is an excerpt from a manuscript of "De Materia Medica" that was commissioned for the Byzantine princess, Anicia Juliana, in 512 C.E. The original manuscript is now housed in the Austrian National Library in Vienna.
