Historical Context:
Growing up in Paris, Texas, from a young age Irby Brown knew he wanted to become an artist. He received his first commission to paint a landscape for a local shop owner at just thirteen years old. After serving in the Army, Irby studied for over three years with the prolific landscape painter, Olin Travis. His spontaneous brush strokes, combination of warm and cool colors, and his use of light throughout his paintings show a strong influence from French Impressionists. He often painted en plein air, meaning directly outdoors, for much of his career.
