Historical Context:
In 1898, Alten traveled to France to study at the Acadamie Julian. In Paris, he started to paint Parisian scenes similar to that of his peers. These city scenes had been popularized in the United States a decade earlier by American Impressionist Childe Hassam (1859 - 1935).
