Elaine Dalcher is a local Grand Rapids based artist specializing in brightly colored oil paintings of scenes and objects found in or near her home and studio. She often uses a close-up perspective, asking the viewers to get close and see the value she saw in whatever she was painting. In 2000, Dalcher was diagnosed with 4th Stage Lung Cancer. This series of 15 self-portraits on mirrors documents her fears, emotions and life during her chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
"Life is not a bowl of cherries now, as I thought it would be. Issues weigh heavy. Here I am in group therapy where I feel desperate for approval and love."
