Historical Context:
This photograph is one in a series titled, “Pilgrimage,” taken during a trip through Israel and Turkey by local Grand Rapids photographer Dee Versluis in an attempt to journal different practices, customs, and people along her journey. In her words, “I find that the most dramatic and honest images include people. I have always been fascinated by people, their customs and their daily lives. The contrast between my life and those who live in other countries is visible in some of my work.” This particular photo of school girls was taken near The Dome of the Rock, an Islamic shrine in the Old City of Jerusalem.
