Atoyan discovered his long-life career of unique art map-making while working on a thesis for the art academy he was attending. He had been looking for mistakes in perspective in 500-year-old map drawings by Durer, Leonardo, and Rembrandt, who were all involved in drawing ancient maps. He decided that he could revive this lost genre and paint maps in detail, adding real landscapes and architecture. When Atoyan made his first maps in the 90s he was the only mapmaker of the kind in Europe, capable of drawing historic centers of world-famous cities and towns “with heart afire†and amazing precision.
