I had worked with James many times in the past, both at Landfall Press and at Echo Press. This print was produced during a workshop at the University of South Dakota. Jim was a master with the technique of Acid Tint in lithography. A litho stone was prepared with a very thin film of greasy litho ink rubbed into the surface. That surface was then “etched†with various strength mixtures of gum arabic and nitric acid. The artist literally had to work “blind†for the effect of the etch was not visually apparent until the entire drawing was finished and rolled with ink and printed.
