Artist Biography:
Edouard Manet was a nineteenth century French painter who is regarded as one of the first artists to approach modern-life subjects during a time when historic and religion themed works were primarily produced. He was a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism and Impressionism, and his early masterworks are considered wastershed painting that mark the genesis of modern art. His roughly painted style, photographic lighting, and attention to the material quality of paint were the beginnings of new modes of artistic practice, one that ins now classified as early modern.
