Moved to the United States in 1851. His father worked with Terra Cotta and he started out working with the modeling clay from his fathers shop. He studied to be a portrait painter. In 1868 he moved to Paris, Rome then back to the united states painting portraits and watercolors. He ended up teaching a life class at the St Louis school and museum of fine art from 1876-1884. He spent the last of his life in DC where he painted a mural for the Library of congress.
