Artist Biography:
Karl Bodmer, born in 1809, was a Swiss artist specializing in painting and lithography. His grandest endeavor was traveling to America in order to retrace the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1805. While on his expedition, he had the opportunity to paint portraits, landscapes and images of daily life of the Mandan Indians, providing the world with a visual, historical record of their existence before the majority of their population was wiped out, falling victim to a smallpox epidemic. This body of work consists of some of Bodmer's most renowned works, both for their artistry and sociological and historic contributions.
